Abbott, i dont think anyone said the composer was better than the RNC. that's down to personal choice and whether you like the sound of the composer or the RNC.

the composer will be better for you if.. you need gates, need a peak limiter at the end of the compression stage, need side chains (does the RNC have this..) or if you need 2 mono channels.

correct me if im wrong, but the RNC will only work as 1 mono compressor, or stereo but with controls for only one side.

the RNC is good if you're looking for a more transparent sound as Bruce described it as.

go and try them out if you can, that's probably the best advice you'll get.

Save your money until you can get something that you wont be looking to replace in 12 to 15 months.
Like any investment, think "long term".

hmm, true, but some compressors, even the cheaper ones will always have a place in the rack. the composer is one of those for many people, so is the RNC probably. im not too familiar with the RNC but I know lots of engineers/producers including myself who have composers amongst the higher end avalons, meeks, focusrites or whatever.

Composer, Hmmmm

I have an HHB Radius 30 tube compressor that I like alot. Also, Digital Performer has a number of plug-in compressor and I just got a composer. I have only used it for one recording so far, I used it on a synth bass part. It was pretty good though it colors the sound alot more than the HHB. By comparison, the HHB does not color the sound at all. The composer seems like it will be use ful and for 99 bucks, how can you go wrong. That's the price of dinner for two in a decent restaraunt and that definitely turns to shit. The Composer does really color the sound which may or may not be a bad thing. On that piece I was sorking on, I might choose ultimately to record the bass with less coloration, however, on other pieces that are more electronic sounding, it would probably work great. We'll see.

Alesis 3630

Buy two of them!

Just kidding!! :)

Although I'm not thrilled with them myself, I can't believe the overwhelming hatered of one unit! I've been using a Behringer lately, but it's been slammed almost as hard as the 3630. You will get what you pay for just like anything else.
