It's a s simple as the title suggests... what would you recommend in the way of a good VST compressor?

One vote here for the Dynamizer by Roger Nichols software.

G.

Oh one more thing.. I shoulda mentioned I'm primarily looking for free pugins..

Thanks for the sggestions so far - will be checking them out!

I guess I should at least try to be helpful. Some free compressor plugins that are good are Blockfish and GranComp. I also like the Mdsp Compressor on certain things, especially if I'm really looking to smash something up good.

By "smash something up good" he meant?

I meant to compress the shit out of the signal!

By the way, I just did a search for "Free VST Compressor" and came up with 111 results. Wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

Another vote for blockfish. I use it a bit on drums for a colored compression. For something more transparent, try vanilla compressor.

Free up an analog I/O on the interface and go for the really nice compressor :D

Yup. Plus having a good, easy to use, analog compressor in your toolbox is never a bad idea.

Make sure to turn on the super nice setting!

ReaComp is also really good, but I'm not sure if you can use it without Reaper.

Both the fish suite (Blockfish) & antress have good freebies.

UAD-1's LA2A is the best compressor I've encountered for vocals. For everything else it really depends, but I use this one on most of the vocal tracks I do.

I like Kaerhaus' (sp?) Classic Compressor, and Blockfish.
