You could always get a preamp (2,4 or 8 channels) and use that to go from XLR to jack or whatever the machine uses. There are XLR->TRS adaptors, but if you're using condenser mics you will actually need a 48v supply which the preamp will provide.

Have a listen to the song in this link. It was recorded by one of the members here on a 488 some years ago.

That sounds great! I was skeptical about buying a 238, thinking 8 tracks on 1/8" tape would probably sound like ass. I guess that won't be an issue. :D

Actually...would I be at a disadvantage with only 2 XLR inputs? I'm thinking that I'm going to need a couple of mics for drums and the bass which I'd be recording simultaneously. Is there a way round this or should I look at getting something else? S:

Like jpmorris said,..You can get yourself a preamp, or you can get yourself a separate phantom power supply unit.
I've got an old Ross 4 channel unit, and an old Peavey 4 channel unit that I use with my Portastudios. This is a very simple solution.

Don't let that (not enough phantom powered channels) deter you away from getting a 488, or 488 mkII. They are great machines for recording.
If you are looking for more simultaneous channels for recording,..you should also look into getting a 688. You would still need a phantom powered unit with the 688 as well.

Brilliant, I was thinking that the 1/4s would be of lesser quality than the XLRs but with preamps this should be ok? Thanks for the help :)
