I just came up with this completely original idea for a thread, pretty cool huh?

I'll start: Fostex VM04 mixer $100.00 Musician's Friend

The Florida humidity plays hell with potentiometers, not a problem with a digital mixer.

A few nominations . . .

* RNC Compressor

* Oktava MC012 microphone

* M-audio sound card

I would give a lifetime achievement award to:

* Whomever invented the AKM a/d converter chip.

* Whomever invented the Burr-brown opamp.

* Ted Fletcher (founder of Joemeek).

I've heard that for a short while, Pultecs were going for about 3-5 hundred bucks! Until people realized how good they were.
I also scored 2 Studer Revox machines fro free, from a studio that thought they were outdated.

The Yamaha QY-70 sequencer has my vote. At $399 new, it's a fully featured MIDI sequencer with 480 clocks per quarter note. The onboard sounds aren't the best (which doesn't matter if you use modules), passable in fact better than many keyboard sequencers out there. But for composing the thing kicks ass, battery powered if you wan't to raise eyebrows in the coffe shop. 16 linear tracks with 8 pattern tracks,EQ, effects ...I could go on all day. When I first picked it up I swore it was alien technology.

I got another.

I got a Zoom MRS-4 four track digital recorder from Sam Ash, during a "Buy this, get that" sale.

They threw in a nice EV cobalt 90 mic for free. It was supposed to be a Cobalt 70, which was two steps down in price, but they were out, so they threw the 90 in instead!! Nice little mic!!

Not only that, but I got the whole package at Zzounds price which was $20.00 cheaper than Sam Ash's price. Sam Ash was very good about meeting the Zzounds price.

$229.00 For a really nice digital four track, and a very decent mic.

Going on the assumption that best bang for the buck doesn't have to be limited to inexpensive gear, I would say that the items that have "paid for themselves" many times over in my studio would be:

Steinway piano
Lawson L47mp mic
Avalon U5 DI
Oktava MC012's
Lucid Gen6x

and in spite of the outrageous cost, to be honest, I'd have to include:

Pro Tools Mix Plus system running on Mac G4 with Waves Plug-ins.

...if for no other reason than I never have to touch an ADAT again.

When I think of what has contributed to making me productive and making me money, the answer would be MOTU Digital Performer. Without that software, 90% of what I do would be impossible.

Second place would go to the AT 4033. SM57 running close behind.

As for real inexpensive stuff, the Behringer Composer and VX2000 voice channel would have to make the list. The MXL V67 and V93 as well as the Oktava 012 deserve a nod as well. Oh, and those Behringer Em8000 omni's are such a deal!

Granted, its not super high end stuff, but I'm making it work. I like that ART levelar once in a while also for a certain color. I think you can get those on EBAY for like $35 bucks.

I have to second SM-57,RNC, Oktava MC012. I will add Lexicon MPX-100, AKG D690, The American Strat, TC Electromics M300, and EBTECH LLS-2.-Richie

I just got two of the Octava M012's for $199 at Guitar Center, jeesh, what a deal. The bar code label on them read $499 each, hehe, the OLD retail price.

Other nods:

RNC - a godsend at $175

Joemeek VC1Qcs - $599 spread over 3 months (under $200 a month!, at American Musical Supply, they rule!).

797Audio C1 - A sweeeet large diaphram condenser at under $200!

GrooveTubes AM-51 and the others--nifty larege diaphram tube mics at under $200 (gotta surf a bit to find that price, but it is out there).

This is my very first post, so a big "HELLO, my name is
sebster, and I'm an hemorecordingaholic" to everyone.

1.) AT4033 @$250 - I can use it on just everything

2.) UAD-1 @$599 - the Pultec gives me enough 12k and bass for my mixes

3.) BBE SonicMaximizer @$99 - without it, the brasses just would not shine

eehhh now....I'm just looking at my little baby...CFX20 MACKIE mixer...she's been everywhere with me...every single gig in last 3 years, and she's with me in my room (studio) as well...It wasn't very cheap, but it paid its self off about 100 times.....(but the owner pissed it all up the wall):D :D

Are you kidding!----

The 4 track!

after that, I side with Track on the 57...
Any loser can get a NEW multitrack recorder and quality mic for under $200!!!!

Vurt,

Show me a new digital four track recorder for under $200.00. If there is one, I haven't seen it.
