Ok...I have a 24 track analog board with phantom power and of course condenser mics.. I have a 31 Band Graphic Equalizer with a Compressor/Limiter/Gate all in one unit going to a Digital mixer..

My question is whats the best order to have this and if i'm missing anything very important..I was given this equipment to open a studio B type thing and it made me carious....Any opinions are welcome and appreciated...Thanks..

Steve

I'm not to sure in what you're asking, but your EQ/Comp would be best utilized connected to each channels insert to boost/cut freqs and for peak-levelling during recording or in the boards Main Inserts to adjust overall freqs and normilization of recorded material during mixdown.

If you are asking should the signal pass through the EQ first or through the comp first - I think the majority of people would indicate to send the signal to the EQ and then to the comp (mainly so that the gate on the all in on unit is basically last in the chain).

At one point I had an EQ as the last process - my logic being that I could EQ anything I lost in compression, etc. I have changed my way of thinking and now choose to have compression and then gating as the last process in the chain.

Hopefully if you are tracking properly, you will need little or no EQ, very little compression and hopefully the gate will have little to do.

Unless you left something out, it sounds like you are missing a recording device of some sort.

I have a hardisk 16 track digital after my analog .

Are you recording to a Roland VS, Fostex, Mackie or Alesis?
Can you kindly be a lil mo' specific in what you're trying to accomplish?

I use a Topaz 24/8 board patched to an Alesis HD24. I've learned from the many smart peeps here to capture the best, optimal signal on each track, preferably "dry"! Previously, I was a stone-cold "tweak-freak" constantly inserting various signal processing devices such as EQ's and comps, and overly compensating for, what I thought, was unnecessary freq'y adjmts and signal levelling. My reasoning for this "tweaking" wasn't based on not knowing my monitoring system, but to add more "hype" to my tracks when in actuality all I was doin' was overwhelming the recorded signal with processing nonsense!
Over time, Ii have learned, to simply use my EQ with subtlety.
A 2-3db boost/cut at mid's, an occasional 70hz roll-off of low end
freqs etc. I have var comps, but basically employ the RNC on
synth horns, mic'd git amps and the like for transparent comp'ing
and the Composer Pro on bass for it's decent limiting. If there is any signal-freq degradation via the comps (and usually there is very little) I'll patch the EQ after processing for minute db compensation!.

Just my .00000001 cents!

Like i said this was given to me for a bs studio...I have a Crate 24 track phantom powered analog bored with a Fostex 16.. Fostex isn't my first choice but it was free..I'm probably will record alot of hip hop with this...In this case I was even thinking of selling the Analog and just going straight to the fostex because it does have phantom power on it... I don't know if that would make any differance in sound but i would think so..

If you are referring to the Fostex VF 16, yeah man , you won't need the analog board as you can perform your own mixing within the unit.
