Best $99 Monitor Solution?

Please save the attacks, barbs, and wrist slapping... Can anyone suggest a useable extra set of cheapie monitors? I'd like to find a pair to use when I move my DAW to another room sometimes and tire of using cans. I've read some decent reviews of the Roland micros, but would appreciate any feedback before I begin hitting the stores.

You might consider a set of wireless cans. Then, you don't have to move the DAW. I can sit outside, up to 300 feet, and listen to my stuff or any other CD or tape or rounded wax of yore.

A good set of wireless will run around 100 pezzutos.

That's a good question. I don't think I've seen a shoot-out with the low end monitors availible these days. :) I was shocked at the price of "monitors" as I was flipping through Musicians Friend the other day. How can they call a $100 set of speakers "monitors?"
 
There is nothing to stop any speakers being labelled 'monitors'. It just a meaningless sales and marketing term used by pro audio companies. Just like the myth that all 'monitors' are flat and accurate while all 'hifi' speakers are coloured and inaccurate.
 
J., a classic pair of inexpensive speakers that have been used by pro's (like Auratones) were the Realistic (Radio Shack) Minimus 7's.

They're no longer made, however, I've got a pair in excellent cosmetic and working condition. They're helpful in dissecting
mid-range, as they have no "real" bass (the Roland's don't
either though)-like most any of these small speakers.

My home studio is just mainly for initial tracking now,
so they're not needed as a mixing reference any more.

Mr. Q, do those Tannoys work O.K. next to a computer monitor?
Asking since those aren't shielded.

Neither are my Minimus 7's come to think of it.
Should have mentioned they're "passive" not "active" speakers too.
But they cost a lot less than $99! :)

Bought a set of actives by Creative Labs for $50. Two tweeters and subwoofer. It has no mid, but sounds surprisingly good. Sure, I prefer my Tannoys for mixing, but for $50 it's darn good value for money! :)
 
Hafler M5s go for $100 a pair at the MF clearence center here in KC.
