The Seventh Circle stuff gets raves and you can mix and match different preamps.
i was thinking about that Seventh Circle. but i'm not so good with a soldering iorn
Let's just say I'm not the most meticulous person on the planet, I'm always looking for quick and dirty shortcuts. I'm also not particularly knowledgeable about electronics.
However, I built 2 out of my 3 SCA preamps (an API and Neve clone) without any problems whatsoever. The third, my first, suffered from excess beer consumption prior to work and a mangled job undoing a couple steps I foolishly rushed through. Even this 3rd preamp was very cheaply fixed by Tim, the guru of SCA.
While I'm sure the Sebatron and Sebatron stuff is great, these SCA units are really amazing. I borrowed my neighbor's API lunchbox and the SCA API clone is astonishly close it's punchy, has a shimmery color to it - even better than the real thing on many applications. The Neve clone is slightly darker, big and fat and menacing.
You can push the transformer load on both and then adjust the output to set levels.
The preamps have gain like you wouldn't believe, so they can power anything.
Once you buy the pre-built chassis format for $300ish bucks, preamp kits are around $300 for API, Neve and John Hardy clones, considerably less for Millenium and RNPesque preamps.
