Different patchbays have different ways of switching modes...
...However, if your studio isn't going to change much, you may need to set up the patchbay only once.

Which argues the hardwire point quite "pointedly". I haven't switched modes in any of my patchbays since I've owned them...Kinda makes adding a physical switch into the circuit a liability, eh...? ;)

I have reconfigured my studio over the years. The patchbays where you flip the cards are fine. More work than flipping a switch, but easier than cutting traces and soldering. I wouldn't even want the switches like the Samson and Behringer models unless I knew I would need to be reconfiguring the patchbay regularly.

Ok, so how easy is it to switch the mode of a patch bay?

the PX2000 (unbalanced) and PX3000 (balanced) use a switch on top to alter the configuratoin. very nice and easy. I have both and also a set of DBX patches. I don't find a significant difference except the DBX have to be pulled apart to reconfigure (which I don't bother since they're half-normalled and I use the Behringer ones for "custom" setting...)
