Behringer MDX2600 Composer Pro XL Compressor

I have a Behringer MDX2600 Composer Pro XL Compressor and I have been trying to understand how to make it work. I have the manual, however, I guess I either do not understand or have something hooked up incorrectly. I want to use this item in my recording process. Any starting point would be very appreciated.

I know many do not care for this gear. I also know there are some who have had good results. I am not asking for your opinion, I am asking for help in getting started with this piece of equipment. I appreciate your patience.
