I'm a newbie to this particular forum, but I like to think I know my gear (I work at a pro sound hire company and use 'real' desks every day). I have a couple of pretty simple requests for info, regarding the Behringer MX8000/MX8000A/MX9000 desks.
I know, Behringer desks suck ass, the power supplies are unreliable, yadda yadda, I know most of that. Don't bother replying to this thread if you're gonna flame the company for your own amusement (other threads can be hijacked for that purpose, I'm sure...)
So:
1. I have a limited budget, which is *just* short of a new MX9000 from Digital Village.
2. I need a desk pretty damned quick.
3. Sound quality ain't that big a beef for what I'm gonna be doing as long as the noise factor isn't silly.
4. I need direct outs on every channel
Can anyone reccomend me something in THE SAME PRICE BRACKET that will do the job as well/better with a comparable spec? I'd prefer a new desk so that if something goes tits-up I can send the thing back on warranty. The only other options seem to be second hand Mackies (which I've heard mixed opinions on, excuse the pun) or a second hand Soundtracs Topaz (which I've also heard bad things about).
So, aside from the PSU's overheating (which can probably be solved by installing a massive fan next door to it), has anyone here personally experienced or heard of any other reliability issues with the MX8000/9000s? There's second hand MX8000s going on ebay for a reasonable price, but I'm a bit wary of second hand stuff.
And like I said before, I know Behringer ain't the best. Given enough cash I'd be heading for A&H-land, believe me. There's a second hand GL4 at work that they're trying to flog, but after seeing how many times that's died out on the road I'm not even convinced I should go for that (outta my price bracket anyway).
I'm about to go do some research into the Yamaha analogue boards (looked at a second hand 01v96 until I realised it wouldn't really do what I want it to do), but I have a 20 channel Yamaha 'my first mixing desk' (dunno what model no. is off the top of my head) that blows goats, so I'm not expecting much from them.
Can you guys reccomend any other makes to check out for sub-£600 24-channel desks with direct outs?
Cheers.
EDIT: Checked out the Yammy boards, the equivalent looks a bit Fisher-Price to me compared to the MX...
