Just bought one for unbelievable price of £26. Anyone know why its so cheap?

Why it's so cheap:

Because it's a cost & corner cutting design both engineering and material-wise stamped out in China by underpaid workers.

I'm still not taking it back! .. perhaps I'll make a little shrine in the garden...

Just like everything else in 99.999% of American homes that have "made in China" printed on it. If you are going to live by your hollier than tho approach and take the high road then do it right and get rid of everything stamped "made in China" you own and see how easy life is. No, don't even go to the trouble, just look into it and see just how many of your intruments and how much of your recording gear are NOT made or have parts that are sourced out to China and get rid of them,.. you wont be recording anymore, Friend.

Holier than thou?

Perhaps I'm not the one who's holier than thou....

I use Chinese goods, of course. They all have their place.

I like my handmade tube & ribbon mics though. Made them myself. My A*P*I 312s and my Fairchild preamps are American made if I'm not mistaken. My Dukane stuff may or may not have been made in China.

I'm guessing the GTAM62s I have are Chinese made for the most part. The older BLUE and Oktavas are russian...

I'm sure they have some great engineers in China designing the stuff... But as anything else anywhere these days, there are probably cost-cutters looking over their shoulders telling them to downgrade. Then we could get into the pitfalls of mass production for marketing.

I'd use a C1. I wouldn't take it back. All mics have their own flava, and I love them all.

I subscribe to the 'clean signal path' idealogy of recording though. Probably couldn't tell it from all of the old transformers in my signal path, but hey, at least most of them are tried and true A*P*I, Jensen, Marinaire, or Beyers...
