Hello forum. I was wondering if anybody out there is using a behringer ada 800 for recordings? I've been trying to get some information on how good or bad it sounds. I have looked around the web and read a lot of reviews. Mainly good reviews because of the price. I also wanted to see if anybody uses it with a Digidesign 003+ and protools 8. I want to see if it functions properly. I've seen videos on youtube where people use it with the 003(the one with 4 preamps) I'm just curious to see if anybody uses it with the 003+(the one with 8 preamps). If so i would love to hear some feedback on how it runs. I appreciate any kind of response Thanks

First, I think you mean ADA8000. If so, I'm afraid I'm a little dated, as I use the ADA8000 with the Digi002, and I have never found a need to upgrade Protools 6.0, which has bizzillions of features I don't need or use. All that said- the ADA 8000 pres are at least as good as the ones in the 002. Admittedly, I only use the 8000 when I need a bunch of additional channels. 98% of my work is done through premium outboard pres by Avalon, Pendulum, and Joemeek. I can tell you that the 002 and PT006 recognize the 8000 and have no problem routing its ADAT output.-Richie

Thanks Monroe. I really appreciate the response. I'm still undecided about this unit. The reason being is that i'm not sure if my computer will handle all 16 tracks at one time. I hope i can get more responses about it. Once again thanks.

If your concern is whether your computer can handle recording 16 tracks at once, you might tell us a little about your computer first!

I use up to four ADA8000s in live situations but rarely for recording.

The mic pre amps are "adequate" but not great sounding. However, try to avoid them with low output sources--on my boxes at least, they become excessively noisy in the upper 10% or so of the range.

One thing for you to think about is that you'll need to work out your word clock strategy. The ADA8000s can take their reference from an ADAT input but, if you're using more than one and have a WC source, it can be better to route to them via the coax inputs...you can use "T" connectors so long as you terminate the last one.

^^^This^^^

I've got 32 channels in, and 16 out. 16 of the ins and 8 of the outs go through ADA8000s (mostly just using them as coverters). I had to sync the whole rig with coax and T connectors to make it work right--but that was actually pretty simple.

I haven't recorded/produced any platinum sellers yet, but the ADA8000's sound fine to my ears. The comment about the upper 10% being a bit noisy is spot on. I use 'em for pre's on less important tracks, but mostly as converters for other outboard preamps.

I am currently using Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Editon Version 2002 Service Pack 3. It's a Dell Dimension DV051 with Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80Ghz, 2.99 GB of RAM. I use Protools 8. I only use this computer for recording only. I runs great with the 003+ and all 8 tracks at once with no latency.

Sounds like you should be good with 16 tracks then. Surprised the system runs at all with Media Center. I have heard nothing but problems with PT and Media Center. However, it sounds like it's working for you. Your computer is plenty powerful.

Thanks Eric. I appreciate the response. Didn't think about putting my computer specs in the the post. Lesson learned. I was a bit concerned about the xp version i was using. I did research on the AVID website and realized that it might work. I took a chance on it. Even the AVID tech said it might not work, but i went ahead and did it. I does work good. I get the occasional glitch every now and then, but that's just PC for ya. I'm waiting for the new imacs to come out. I think i'm going to get one. I hear the Sandy Bridge proccessors are going to be awesome!
