Behri Ultra-gain for DI's?

I need a couple di's and ive heard good reports of guys using those art tube MP as bass di and figured that the ultragain maybee similar, plus its rackmountable and you almost get 2 for 1.....
 
Nope, don't think so. The Ultragain (I have an ancient Ultragain 2000 model sans tube) has no high impedance input. The new very cheap (50 bucks) Tube Ultragain 100 that looks similar to a Tube MP, however, that they presented at the Frankfurt Musikmesse does have a high impedance input (1 Meg) according to the Behringer website. But it'll take a few weeks before it will hit the stores. Hope that helps.
 
I`ve been using a DI-100, straight into ultragain`s input for bass recording. Nice sounding...
 
Are there any cheap rackmount DI's thats double as mic pres?
 
Yep i downloaded the manual and it is also a DI.

I dont know how practical it would be though because in principle you are trying to limit the length of unbalanced guitar/bass cable so in the case of a little di box you can have it right there next to you and have the long run back to the console balanced, but the ultra-gain will more than likely be in a rack with comp and dsp's etc... but NEXT to the console, so in effect your running a long unbalanced run into the ultragain to be conected by a very short balanced run into the console.

I might be wrong but would'nt this be defeating the purpose?
 
You can plug a bass into the 1/4" input of the Ultragain, and use it as
a bass DI, however, this will only convert your signal to a mic level
balanced line. To bring the signal up to full line level you have to
run the signal into your second channel. This sounds pretty good.
Recently, I bought the $35 Behringer Ultra-DI. This box allows me
to split the signal, so that I have a 1/4" line to run to my bass amp,
and a balanced mic level signal which I can run into the XLR mic input
of the Ultragain, and get plenty of gain using just one channel. Works
great.
 
The Ultragain 2200 works as a DI only for low impedance instruments such as keyboards or an *active* bass. In other words it only works as a DI when you usually don't need a DI. It does *not* have high impedance inputs. If you want to use it with a passive guitar or bass, you need an impedance converter, e.g. a separate active DI box. Or wait till the Ultragain 100 comes out; that'll be much cheaper (but not rack mountable).
 
Rossi is right, the ultragain has an input impedance of 60K ohm which is not a very high. For a bass DI you would probably want a high input impedance ie at least 500K ohms, typically over 1M ohm.
 
Thanks thats what i need to know.

Is there any reasonbly priced dual channel rack pres that double as DI'S?
 
I should have been more specific, but i was looking at the ultra-gain so that probly the price range im talking about...say under $400 AUD?
