Beginner Need Help

I am trying to do some recording using my computer and am kind of stuck.
I have Cubase SE, Firewire Solo interface, two monitor speakers and instruments. I am wondering if I need an amp to record or what? Should I hear sound from my speakers whenever I play something in general without recording, because I don't. Tried to record and nothing came through.
Please help. :confused:
 
how are you connected to your soundcard? give us more detail on your setup...
 
the only way I am hooked up to my computer is through the firewire port
 
are you micing an amp or going through a direct box?
 
and my soundcard is built into the motherboard. it says it passed the test successfully when i start Cubase
My M-Audio FireWire screen shows that I get response because I can see the bar moving when I use the microphone. I don't get any response from plugging in the guitar though.

The only other thing that works is that the monitor speakers put out sound from my computer
