I especially like the Strawberry Fields Forever and the Lady Madonna, great stuff!
I listen to Tomorrow Never Knows from time to time and wonder how Paul and Ringo got such a fat sound out of just drums and bass. And, of course, I had to try it for myself at some point...
Tomorrow Never Knows:
No surprise, much thinner than Beatles!
That Ringo can drop a fat beat when he wants to!

Having listened to this again, let me retract whatever I said (above) about it being lofi.guttapercha said:Hi fellow Fab-4-aholics,
Here is our rendition of 'Old Brown Shoe'.
I forgot what a rocker it is, until my friend Carlos (singing) got me into it again
for doing a cover.

There's good separation of each track, but it also hangs together as a mix. The playing is tight. I probably would have EQ'd the vox, drums and piano a little brighter in the high end, but the guitars cut through with good hifi. The bright guitar tone kinda offsets the subdued sound of the piano. The vocals are tight. Anyway, e'one has their own opinions on mixing, not that it means anything.
This track just flat out rocks, and I'm impressed you just banged this out so fast and nailed it. This track is one of my HR/Beatles favorites. George Harrison wrote some great songs. and for my money, your playing and replication of the track is awesome.[/b]

Dave, Thanks for listening again - and I'm touched by the compliment. I'm a little embarrased for winding up copying GH's solo almost note for note, but I couldn't come up with anything nearly as cool. I tried lots of takes, but nothing even could come close to what George did on that song. He really was a fantastic guitar player.
On the mixing aspect of it - I'm still so new at using this kind of gear, and I have crap for monitors to actually listen to the mix on (Some Phillipine-made Onkyo surround speakers that came with a "home theater" setup). Carlos has a great voice - it sounds good (to my ears) with almost no EQing. How does one EQ vox, or anything for that matter, so it "sits in a mix" better?
Also, would I be better off using decent headphones for mixing? I always have thought that 'cans' make the music sound much better than it actually is.
The whole "sitting in the mix" thing is a bit of a mystery. I made a bit of an advancement by cutting the low end out of the guitar solo and the vox, but I have a feeling that there's more to it....
Have a great new year,
Josh

I'm honored to have inspired you. Thanks very much for listening.gvdv said:... Don, I really, REALLY like your version of 'If I Fell' - I can never 'hear' the harmony (John) vocal properly and have been meaning to get down and actually figure out the notes on guitar so that I could then learn to sing it; you've inspired me to do this.
