guttapercha, VERY cool sir! A bit lo fi but so what. Excellent! I do believe I'm going to makw a CD out of all these.

Thanks so much for the feedback. If you don't mind, would you let me know what made the recording lo-fi? I'm relatively new to the recording stuff - this is the 4th track I have ever produced.

Glad you like the performance - that's really the most important part.

The piano sounds a bit muddy to me. It's all well played though. What are you tracking to?

Hey thanks for the quick reply. Here's the set-up:

Keys: Roland VK-8 Combo Organ, using the internal Piano sound going direct stereo into the board. (Yamaha MK10/2 -->Tascam US122-->Cubase LE).

That keyboard only has that one piano sound, which is rather dull. On the Beatles version, it sounds like the piano being used has thumbtacks in the hammers (that old-west kind of sound). Maybe some EQing would liven-up the VK-8's Piano?

oh man...i used to have an eleanor rigby cover that i recorded all the string parts with actual instruments. my voice sucked though.

i also had an across the universe. both were terrible in recording, mixing, and performance (vocals are never good enough though)

If I may,...

In my opinion, all the parts were well played, together & authentic sounding. Even the clarity is fine. What I believe is a "lofi" factor, is that the song doesn't have that "giant" dynamic range or loudness that other modern recordings may have. I don't think that's a sin, though,... if you've listened to any of my recordings, you'll know why.;)

I hope it didn't sound like I was bashing you guttapercha. On the contrary, it kicks major but.

I have a ton more Beatles covers of lesser production value.

One thing I noticed, is that the severely lofi "masters" do not encode well into mp3. I can (and do) listen regularly to my most "lofi" cuts in this genre, but upon encoding a few into mp3, I found them utterly unlistenable,... and therefore un-postable. Otherwise, I'd love to show'ya.

Track Rat would have a good reference of my more "lofi" stuff, as much of it's included on my previous cd set, (some is as yet unreleased). Unfortunately, they don't make the transition to mp3 well. I'll keep trying, though. There are some Beatles covers I recorded that I believe were good and fun to listen to, despite being lofi recordings. I'll keep combing the archives.

However, on another note,... it's hard to pit my lofi stuff against some of the real masterpieces already posted on this thread!!

I'm still listening, & may post again, though!! ;)

What are you using to encode the mp3's, if I may ask?

FWIW, I'd rather hear a lofi recording of a great performance than a perfect recording of a stale, lifeless performance. Of course, a great recording of a great performance is the Holy Grail.

...

I'm using Audiograbber with the LAME encoder plugin. (freeware)
All my stuff should be encoded into 128mbps, otherwise I may have overlooked something.

LAME is what I use. But I use it from the command line, and sometimes it takes a few tries before I get an encoding that does justice to the recording. The 'variable bit rate' (VBR) option sometimes can be a big help.

it's cool

Yah, I wasn't feeling dissed at all - I'm trying to get as much constructive criticism as possible, because I'm such a neophyte with the recording.

Also, it's interesting that you should comment on the mp3 encoder. The mp3 version is obviously junkier than my wav master, even when listening through $10 computer speakers. I used dbPoweramp with the lame plugin and encoded at 192 kbps @ 48kHz. The version of the Lame encoder was 3.93.

Thank you again for listening.

I Will

Had forgotten about this track from a few years ago. Didn't know much about recording then, or have very good gear, so it's noisy. I'm not much of a singer, so the intonation's a little inconsistent too.

I had just gotten home from a late gig, and it was just before Valentine's day. I was thinking about how great my wife is, kind of like that Kenny Rogers song, She Believes in Me. So I recorded this and gave it to her along with the other present I had bought.

Didn't think I'd ever let anybody else hear it.

Super-sweet sounding, Tim. The doubletrack vocals are a nice touch. Where in WA are you?
I'm a Pullmanian (not originally, of course....not that there's anything wrong with that!)

Has anyone here picked up "The Beatles: The Complete Scores"?

It seems to get good reviews on Amazon. The temptation over here is formidable.

JD

I have it. Great book. If you wanna play the Beatles, buy it.

Tim, that is just fantastic sir. I agree the double vox are too cool. That was one of the Beatles favorite studio things to do. Very nice.

Man, I like the triplets in the bass gtr (is it doubled by a 6 string?) at 1:13. Cool organ too.

Thanks Mike and Josh for the comments on "I Will". Josh, I'm in Bellevue.

Ah, I figured that you were in civilization. You do nice stuff, and your web site is quite informative. The bass and guitar are indeed doubled on that chorus. The organ is really my favorite instrument, but I just pretend to play it. It's amazing what laying down some thick chords with a leslie speaker will do for almost any rock song.
