I recently sold my 388 and purchased a Tascam 38 and m-308b. The m-308b was mind, but the 38 wasn't working. I replaced the pinch roller and capstan belt and got the transport back up, but then was having volume issues with the tracks...perhaps relays. The vu's read a great input signal but no volume/very little on playback. Based on an online suggestion I reseated the cards and left the machine on for and hour and a half. Voila! It seems to be working.

That said, I'd love to I'd like to have it calibrated and maybe just "tuned up." I've never soldered anything, so if the relays do need replacing I certainly am not up to tasks. However, I can't find anyone in San Francisco that works on reel to reels. Anyone know of any techs nearby? The closest place I can find is San Jose or Sacramento. Surely a city of this size...perhaps I'm just not looking hard enough or in the right place?

Thanks guys!

Hey, I highly recommend Lawrence of Rance Electronics in north Oakland. He's an amazing tech and he comes recommended by everyone I know. He's also the house tape tech at Expressions in Emeryville. Can't say enough good things about the guy. Extremely helpful and knowledgable.

Look him up in Google.

+1 for Rance
L and M seemed a little sceptical about the funky decks I brought in. Not that I blame them.
The analog rules guy mostly does more "pro' decks, like Ampex.
There is some good info in the sticky on calibration if you want to do it yourself.
Bench time can add up quick.
