which one would you take and why?
 
I've had the MR-8 for almost a year now. It's done everything as advertised and has performed without a problem... other than human error of course. I hope you don't have to pay list price though... I only paid $300 for mine at GC.

As a VF160 user, I have to go with the MR8. Not out of brand loyalty but because I have actually heard some amazing music recorded on those Lil Red Boxes.
 
I use and love the PXR4 Pandora (now $300 at Musician's Friend). It has performed beautifully as a remote recorder with a little added front end (DMP-3, Oktave MC012 X2, EBTECH LLS-2 line level shifter). It is my constant travelling companion with a solid body and a pair of headphones. It's a tuner, a simple drum machine, a metronome. It's built in mic is shockingly effective. Built in USB port, 'verbs, distortion. People never took it seriously because it's so small, but that's what makes it so useful. It's small enough to be there when you need it to be.
When you've upgraded to a kickass DAW or high-end standalone, or a Studer open reel, the BR-532, the MR-8, and others will be long gone, but the little Pandora will continue to have a useful role.-Richie

I haven't outgrown my MR8 yet. I can't afford to.

Been a pretty good lil' ugly-ass red box. I didn't want to buy it initially because of the god-awful color!
 
I know its not digital but, I have a tascam mf-po1 4-track and its pretty cool. I run it through my yamaha mixer and burn to cd, it actually sounds half decent. Though when I get more money and experience quality will be a must.
 
I didn't find the MR8 to be very intuitive as far as the User interface goes. However, it records well enough on very common/popular memory sticks.

the field of digital recorder all-in-one'rs is much wider today than when this thread started!! Even in 2003, this would have been viewed as a pretty narrow poll.:eek: ;)
 
I wanna retract my statement above that they suck.

Instead, I'd only describe them as filling a niche for small, inexpensive, highly capable portable recorders, with some cool features and a few limiting features as well, here & there. Diplomatic, eh? :eek: ;)

Where's the Tascam DP series mentioned? I hear the DPFX's reverbs and guitar effects suck, but for 300 bucks new the dp-01 is a very usable DAW. The 2-band eq sucks (lo, hi, and no mid) but its got a 40 gig HD!
When I bought mine I couldnt find another one in that price range that didnt use pitifully small flash cards....
 
For those prices,you should be recording on the computer you posted this thread from!
