Hi.

I am about to build some bass traps with dimensions 2' X 4'.

The material I have been looking at is

Rockwool RW3 1200x600x50mm - (60kg/m3).

I have read that this is a good material. I am wondering:

How thick ideally should a bass trap should be? 4" or 6"?

Are the (60kg/m3) boards dense enough for the job at 4" or 6"?

Does leaving a space in-between the wall and the trap increase the effectiveness?

Is cotton a good material for covering the bass traps?

Thanks for your ideas and help, Ste.

4" or 6" is good.

My regular traps are 4" and then I put superchunks in the corners. The space in the wall?
I dunno. ;)

Cottons fine for covers and for underwear. Burlap, not so much.
:D

6" will get lower frequencies than 4" If you can do some 6" in the corner, OR superchunk that would be ideal. A mix of some 4" and some 6" is probably the best use of the material. If you are limited by budget it would probably be most beneficial to do more 4" traps than a mix.

It's really a case by case basis. Check out the studio building forum for more info.
