Im looking for an affordable preamp to use for recording bass at home. Im not talking about the rack stuff, just somthing that will let me boost and shape my signal before it gets into my PC.

Suggestions appreciated.

Line-6 has always been awesome. They have a guitar and bass pod. You can record bass throught the guitar pod and have it come out just as well as if you had used the bass pod. My advice is this. If you only record bass and thats all go ahead and buy the bass pod. If you record both buy the guitar pod and use it for both, I did.

consider BEHRINGER BASS V-AMP.

It's called the Bass V-amp, but it has bass, guitar, keyboard, and acoustic amp emulators, unlike the Guitar V-amp, which has only guitar amps.
Also it's a great effects processor.
I needed to record bass and guitar on hard disc just like you without going through amps and mikes and stuff, so this is what i bought.

BEHRINGER BASS V-AMP is about 120
BEHRINGER BASS V-AMP PRO is about 210 (rack version)

they have almost the same properties, except PRO is very solid with metal hardware since it's the rack version. If you're not gonna tour with it, get the standard version that has plastic hardware.

Hi Moonlapse,

I was in the process of making a pre for our bass player when I came accross this http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/BassAttack/ I'm going to try to get one this side of the pond. It's pretty new I think so I can't find reviews anywhere.

I use the "old" Sansamp Bass DI that doesn't have the adjustments that they added later on. Nice Tone.

I've got a Podpro and a BassPodPro. BassPodpro was $499.00 down the drain in my opinion. Of course, it's fun to plug into and try to see how messed up I can get my bass to sound. I'm not really into "wierd sounds" for my bass. All I want is a great bass guitar tone and the Sansamp nails it.. all without having to spin knobs, scroll through menu's, adjust patches..etc. :)

The sans amp wins hands down for me. I've used a David Eden head for years now, but whenever I just get lazy and don't feel like pulling out the entire rig to record, the sans amp is what I turn to.

I have used an Art Tube Pac for years. It does everything I want it to, and have taken it to a couple nice studios I worked in and they liked it too. The only mod from stock I have done to it is replaced the stock tubes with NOS mullards. It gets all my bass work, and that's pretty much the reason I keep it around. The compressor works very nicely for bass. You can listen to any of my music to hear bass tracked with it, i nearly always use that.
