is there a way to create a decent sounding bass track on computer w/ software?

Start with a great sounding bass patch and add a well-written sequence and shazam! a great sounding bass track on a computer. I haven't heard any of these auto-arrangers do more than a "passable" job of sequencing a bass line but that's MUCH faster than trying to program it yourself.

It will only be decent sounding if a computerized sound is what you're after. I tried this using many programs/samples etc when I first started. Basically the best bass sounds I could get either sounded like techno, or a stupid piano. The bass guitar is an important instrument, and can't be faked. You wouldn't try replacing regular guitar with a computer!

Buy a bass and a DI box if you want traditional, realistic sounding bass. If you're into hip hop or experimental shit, then a bass patch might suffice.

I'm not anti-fake-sounds, I'm just trying to save you some trouble. Always be sure to experiment if you're feeling inspired! I love mixing electronic crap with more traditional music. There is some great software out there....if you're interested, head on over to harmony-central.com and check out their software links.

"hip hop or experimental shit"....

Slack, everyone knows thats not shit...its just plain crap.....

And I have to agree about the real bass....Even if you suck at it like me, a real bass will add a nice element...I started with midi drums and bass and it doesnt get any worse....At least with a real bass, even with fake drums, it will add a nice "live" feel......

These are what I would like to call nice bass samples:

("Scarbee's J-slap bass" for Gigasampler)

But yes, no matter how nice the samples and programming are, you will never get the "live feel". To get that, you have to play it live.

since when is shit different from crap? i thought they were the same...thanks for the replies, no comp for bass then :)
