I've been thinking about getting some effects for my bass... what are some of your favorite effect boxes for bass? What do you think about the Boss GT-6B? and etc? Thanks

Boss have the ME50-B coming out very soon Ive heard. My bands guitarist has the ME50 guitar effects unit and it is very good. Im presuming that the bass version will be up to the same standard.

Not sure if you're talking pedals or rack, but either way I'd have a compressor first on the list. I just got probably the best sounding bass tracks I've ever recorded going through and T-Rex CompNova, into an MXR M-80 end then into the soundcard. For electric bass a compressor is an absolute essential. The CompNova is just great on bass!

Thanks guys... I'm looking for an effects box/rack for live... I already have tons of racks in the studio. Thank again.

I like my SansAmp Bass Driver DI. Not really an effect, but it gives a real nice tube-style overdrive sound. I'd like to try that Boss synth bass pedal, but for $200+ I'm not going there any time soon.

Thanks Adam... I also have a SansAmp and it's ok... but it's not what I'm looking for... but thanks again. :)

Chorus is the most comonly used bass effect. The Boss pedal is said to be good, but I must admit I haven't tried it.

Well, the only chorus pedal I would ever use is the T.C. Electronic Chorus/Pitch Modulator/Flanger. But then, I have one. It is by far the best pedal made. Completely analog and it has a better signal to noise ratio (100dB) than most digital units.

My favorite pedals for bass are the Big Muff Pi, and the Digitech Whammy pedal (not for imitating a whammy bar, but for harmonies, and particularly for octaves). And then of course there is the Electro-Harmonix Bass Micro-Synth, or the Frequency Analyzer for that Bootsy thang.

What style do you play or want to play? Do you have a sound in mind? My suggestion would be to go to a music store and try some different effects if you want to experiment. Caution--most bass effects are really unnecessary and once you've played with the gimmick a little you'll never use it again. It'll sound cool in the store but once you bring them out at rehearsals or gig your bandmates will just give you a funny look and the guitar player will sulk about you stealing his sound.

If you can call them effects, equalizers and compressors are always useful--they help shape your tone and "punch." These are sometimes built into bass amps already.

I've been playing bass for years (jazz, funk, tap, slap, r&b, and etc) ... I used some stomp boxes years ago... they were fun but as you stated it became rare that I ever used them. Anyway, I just wanted some new toys to play with and I already have all the basses and amps of my dreams... so I bought a Boss GT-6B this afternoon. Thanks everyone for all your input. :)

Read up on the Boss Synth Pedal. I have one and I use it a little during some of the practice sessions. I love the Bootsy type of effect on it.

I also have a Boss Limiter, EQ, and one of those old school red master pedals.

I need to figure out the best order to set them up in though.

Oh my bad.

I forgot I did a search and pulled up this old thread.

Well, my favorite pedals are the EBS Octabass and EBS BassIQ, the former is of course an octaver (an amazingly well tracking one at that) and the latter is an envelope pedal. Both are entirely analog, built like bunkers, and the sound is second to none. Admittedly I use them very sparingly, but of all the gear I've got these are by far the most fun!

I've had the Boss GT-6B for a while now and overall I like it... there are a few things I wish were different, but overall I like the Boss GT-6B.

Mostly I use a Digitech BP-200. I also use a Moog MuRF-105, a Boss RC-20 looper and a Behringer Bass V-amp Pro. If I'm playing the Conklin GT-7, I'll throw a Digitech RPx400 in the mix.

How d'you like the RC-20? I've only read very good things about it. Everyone apparently really enjoys playing with themselves.

...who'd have thought. Mark Geary, during one of his shows here in Portland, started using it (or something very like it) live and said "this is why musicians never leave their bedrooms!"
