For Bass only?...Live work??...ibanez sound tank compressor!! (and it ain't no rack!)..........much luck with that!!..(seriously!!) :)

If your on a budget, dbx 163 is cool... and it's my not so secret weapon for guitar.
 
Symetrix 501. In my rack solely for bass (although it would be usable for other things as well). The older model with the metal toggle power switch is allegedly better than the subsequent models with the plastic push button. Only available used. Cheap too!
 
dr.colossus, it's good to hear your dbx works for you... I'm wondering How much noise (like a white noise shhhhhhh) does it have. I use to use it always on Kick and bass but have decided I'd rather have a cleaner signal and just use a Plug in. & it also dulls the high end quite a bit. I know that happens w/ Comps but this seems more than it should be.

Even w/ no Mic hooked up, once the dbx is on a line w/ the slider Left I get a pretty audible Shhhhhh. & as I push the slider Right it gets louder and I can't realy go past 1/2 way. Before I got it I had heard they were a bit noisy but usefull... Does this sound right to you?

hmmm. that doesn't sound right at all. I have three 163's two made in the US and one from China. The US ones sound a tiny bit better, but none of them are at all noisy. Maybe you got one that was put together at 3:59 on a Friday afternoon!
 
I just tracked my brother with bass guitar using a Thermionic Phoenix

the damn thing just sounded evil (in a good way :D )

ooooh, just a clarification. This was an acoustical bass, not electric bass (just in case it mattered). Chain was bass guit -> U87 -> Chandler LTD-1 -> Phoenix -> Rosetta 200

Nice. Your probably right. I wonder if a Cap going bad or something could cause this... I'm going to try and find someone to take a look at it.

Are we talking about the 163x? If so, that's what I use. It's great.
 
Does any one know if a UA 6176 would work well for a Bass Di'd?

For Compression I use a freeware Compressor plugin that works very well for my needs and for increaseing the Bass I use another freeware Plugin called "Bass Expander" (I think) and it works very well for adding that extra Bassyness to Di Bass.....

Just thinking you might want to try some freeware plugins and see if they will do the job for you and then you can spend your money on something else....

I appreciate the advice but I already have a 6176 and have not tried it on bass yet. I was just wondering if everyone has or what they thought about it?

yeah I have the 163 (US made) and the 163X (China or Hong Kong). The 163 doesn;t have a HiZ input or make up gain like the 163X. The 163X has exactly the same ":charachter" as the 163, but the 163 is just a touch smoother
