if you detail what you are trying to do with your songs, it would help me respond.

What I'm trying to do is record as many tracks as are necessary to make each song sound unique unto itself and that may require 8 tracks on some and maybe 16 on others.

All of the software is capable of many more tracks than that.

THEN we/I (a collaborative effort) want to mix the stuff to sound as good as possible.

That's about it really. I have Powertracks 7 which I bought. I have Cool Edit Pro 1.2 which was given to me and is technially a no-no. So, I can't upgrade this version of CEP without answering some stricky question. Ya know?

My friend Brett bought CubaseSE for $99.99. I HOPE it's still in the shrinkwrap, because it won't run on his computer.... I think.

According to the sys requirements on the package, a celeron CPU is not kosher with this software.

I'm thinking PT7 is the best Idea because I CAN upgrade it without a visit from the bootleg police.

billy. powertracks plus cep is a good combo because they both have their advantages. powertracks in the midi area and quick laying of tracks and cep for its what i call forensic audio features.i dont want to push you but upgrading from powertracks 7 to latest 9 is dirt cheap. 7 is getting a tad old.
and 9 will give you lots of new features like vocal pitch correction and multi part harmonies. also both cep and popwertracks have their own unique effects built in. so youll have a huge pallette of fx. just an idea.
what you might do to save processing pc power is do a bunch of midi tracks in powertracks, render midi to wave. you can also use virtual sound canvas
for example. do you have a midi keyboard ?
if were me i would use powertracks for fast laying of tracks, and cep for mastering. best of both worlds.peace.
