There's so many different packages you can use to record your guitar playing... but it all depends on your budget. I would recommend Cool Edit Pro (Which is now named Adobe Audition if I can remember correctly), or you can even use simpler packages like Cakewalk. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any that are free, but some you can find for a very reasonable price.

As far as playing a drum track and recording at the same time (correct me if I'm wrong anyone :p ) you'll need a full duplex sound card to allow recording a .wav file while also playing a sound file.

Hey Beth,

Any program will do the same job of recording your guitar. People choose their software based on personal preffernce. Some people like cubase, or pro tools or cake walk and so on. These programs are offered in different pacakages depending on your budget and needs. I assume you're just getting into recording so I would reccomend starting off with something that's free. Audacity is a great free program for you to try out.

As far as listening to your fruity loops drums, the best method would be to export them as a .wav file in fruity loops, then open them up in audacity. You can put the drums on one track and play them back in headphones as you record your guitar. This is called multitrack recording and it's a difficult and confusing world that you're about to plunge into :).

As far as getting your guitar into the comp, it depends whether it's acoustic, electric or acoutic electric. Either can be recorded with a mic and preamp, which is the best method, or alternatively an electric or acoustic electric can be recorded directly into your line in.

I'm not sure if this was too basic for you, I hope it helps.
