Hey Everyone,

I have finally purchased some decent equipment for my small bedroom "studio". I can get nice clean sounding tracks and lay them all out in Cakewalk, but then I'm stuck, I don't really know what to do next. All of my songs sound good but not great like a lot of commercial CDs i listen to. When I mix the song, I don't really know what I am doing, I'll just add some reverb here, some compression here, pan this, pan that, etc, etc. My band's music is somewhat similar to Incubus, but it doesn't have that full and heavy sound we are aiming for.

Is there some book or website that will get me going in the right direction? I know everyone says you just have to use your ears, but is there a book or something that has just some basic techniques in it to get me headed somewhere?

Thanks,
Scott

I also wated to add that all of my mixing is done right on the computer because of my lack for a fancy hardware setup.

Right here Scott. Use the search function and there's days of reading on the subject. If you can be more specific with what you have gear wise, post a link to a tune you've done, folks here can help you out.

Couple of articles for you....

There's my Mixing 101 article to get you started with the basics...

...there's also Ed's (sonusman) gigantic Mixing Secrets thread to give you much more in-depth detail....

...and also a couple of reference books - Bobby Owsinski's "Mixing Engineer's Handbook", as well as Howard Massey's "Behind The Glass"...

That should keep you going!

My Setup...

-1.8ghz Comp
-Behringer MX1604A ( I know, I know....I never said my setup was the best, but it suits my needs very well for the price)
-Shure SM57
-ShureSM58
-Some Audio Technica Mic (not sure of the model)
-Audiophile 2496
-A Pair of Studiophile Monitors

The only song I have uploaded is and older song we did....its at...

Thanks,
Scott
