Right now im running. gt55 into a dmp3 preamp into a mi4 interface using Adobe Audition.

Computer Wise:
2.67ghz i7, 6gb ddr3 ram.

really im just looking for any tips on basic eq'ing/mixing in audition for rap vocals. my first mix down with the interface to me sounds decent, lack of monitors hurt me on knowing for sure. i've recorded music for years, but never really knew what to do in improving vocals other then random presets. any knowledge is appreciated.

Learn.

There are no starting point, there are no presets. You do what you need to do to the tracks you have to deal with.

Undoubtedly, monitoring and the room are key... You can not tweak what you can not hear (period).

although what you say is true, im lookin for ideas on atleast where to start, whether it be the db's my vocals should be around, to processing, anything is helpful.

generally speaking:

EQ: you can get away with getting ride of quite a lot of lows. Muddiness in vocals tends to fall in the 500-800hz region, give or take. hi-pass vocals around 150-200hz, but just slide that upwards until you hear it start to thin the voice out too much. Add a bit of 1-3khz to help presence/get the vocal to cut thru, and a bit of 12khz+ to add "sparkle" or "air". Sibilence is normally in the 5-8khz region.

Of course, all of this varies very much from voice to voice.

Compression: I like compressing vocals. A lot. I mean, really fucking smashing them. Try medium attack (15ms), short release (25ms), easy ration (3.5:1) and fairly low ratio. Have it taking off 6-12dB. I sometimes run my vocals thru a compressor like that, then smash it through some sort of limiter (get something that mimics an 1176).

thats what i was looking for, side note, i just bought some edirol - ma15d monitors, anyone have personal experience w/ them. first pair of monitors so i dont know what to expect.

Thumbs up for AA :D.
what version u have? 3.0? Or a lesser version?

3.0 You can do some mastering, that's why I ask.
