Basic bass

What would you suggest for a decent and economical bass guitar, for someone who can play the guitar and some bass and who plays the bass regularly but not every day?
 
One of the Fender Squire P basses. They're dirt cheep and playable.
 
I'd go for a used MIA Fender. You should be able to find one in the NY metro area for a few hundred.
 
If one wished to upgrade their cheap Squire bass or guitar later wouldn't some better pickups do the job? I'm not really a bass player but do track with a Fender Squire and have wondered if better pickups would greatly improve the sound. I'm pretty happy with the way it plays though (not knowing any better of course).:D

What's a MIA Fender? Missing in Action? Mexican?

I ordered one of those Essex Jazz clone basses for $119.95 a couple of days ago. Should be here by thursday. Everyone over at talkbass.com seem to say they are fantastic basses for the price.

I tried out the MIM Fender Jazz and OLP MusicMan clone. Both were very cool. The 5-string OLP low string is REALLY floppy though.
 
Yeah, a big second for the used MIA Fender.

If you're trying to get the cheapest useful new bass, don't go to a Squier or MIM Fender, go to something by Yamaha or a store brand Korean somethingorother. You'll have to spend almost as much as a real MIA Fender to get a Squier or MIM up to really acceptable standards with upgrades, and you'll never get your money back out.

If you want a good bass that you can always get out from under, get a used MIA Precision.

Shop the want ads, deal hard with a private party and you'll get one you'll never lose a dime on if it's all-original and hasn't had its frets wrecked with stainless roundwounds.
 
I have a Washburn XB100. It looks and plays great. I think I got it for about 375 bucks. Combined with my SWR, and 421, it kicks ass.

I bought an essex jazz bass about a month ago. When it was delivered, I was disappointed right off the bat! It's really crappy.... very cheap feeling! It didn't sound terrible though! I just resold it on Ebay a couple of days ago.

I got an older Washburn mb5 with no finish at all, not even the satin, its raw completely, it`s probably got a quart of lemon oil in it though. with those fat Bartolini pickups and the upgraded active card. I love it....It was a gift though.


A friend up in tenn bought a mexican Jazz for the studio and it plays, sounds, and is built just as good as the pre-75 American Fenders, he only paid a couple hundred for it. I liked it very much..
