Bands, Drummers & Click Tracks

i haven't noticed anyone mention using a click while recording acoustic material, or basically anything else that doesn't have drums/percussion...to me, this seems like the sort of instance where it would most apply

I have no idea who they were. I don't remember the name of the act. It was two guys and two girls who sang, plus the drummer. I'm pretty sure they were touring around nationally, with their own FOH and Monitor engineers, so it was an easy gig for me. In fact, I don't think they were American (maybe Australian, but don't quote me on that one)
One of the the guys played acoustic guitar (even when there was electric in the mix) and the other guy stood in front of a keyboard that wasn't even on (although we hooked it up through some DIs so it looked real on stage). What really got me was the bass in the mix, yet mysteriously no bass on stage.

Were the tracks you did real instruments or MIDI?

*edit*I found the press release from last year's season, looks like the revue was just called "Abba Celebration." People loved the show though.*edit*

That wasn't the same band. The show I'm working with has a band and 4 female singers, and 2 male singers. The backing tracks are another 10 vocal parts and incidental parts that the band can't play during the show.

Yeah, totally different. Your show sounds better. I don't really remember, but I think the "band" for our show had some obvious MIDI going on. Maybe I'm making that up though, it was probably about a year ago.

Give me a break. I was citing one example, not presenting my entire case.

I understand that. I clearly wasn't talking about you, since I haven't had time to discuss anything with flea.

I do what works best for me and don't worry about what other people think - Especially sound engineers.

You sound like you think you are being attacked, you're not.

I suppose you think Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin would sound so much better if they were recorded in protools to a click track, but I think they sound great the way they recorded back then - even without a click track.

You will have to admit that the type of out-of-the-box style of music that hendrix and zeppelin played would never get signed today. It's too different. Now record labels are only signing things that sound the same. Most of the classic rock stuff would have never happened if the industry was where it is today.

Okay, I guess I see where you are coming from now. It's kind of sad, and I disagree completely, but I see where you are coming from. I actually prefer “out-of-the-box style”. To me it’s the original bands that break out from the pack that matter most.

I do agree with one thing you said: "It is never about the engineer." You have to let the band do what suits them. If they are worth a shit they know thier music far better then the engineer ever will.

And don't worry I don't feel "attacked". Your post just struck me as a little arrogant and condescending at first. You are probably not like that, but I know a lot of smalltime guys who have little small studio's that run around acting like they are the authority on the record industry.

Most people would prefer "out-of-the-box-style" music, but the record companies won't take a chance.

This 'small studio' isn't the only thing I've done in the music industry in the last 25 years. I'm also not a small time guy. (Now that sounded arrogant)

I try to avoid him. The gap in his teeth is distracting.

If it wouldnt be too much trouble I was windering if maybe I could come take a look at your studio and maybe pick your brain about recording?? I am just getting started with a firepod and my laptop and would love to talk to someone in a real studio about recording.
