im using a rode ntk with a behringer xenyx1204 for a pre. im getting a weird sound when i record like dead air and a sort of radio freq coming through. ive tried using a different pre (m-audio moblepre) and got the same thing. i dont know what to do. the mic is working but its picking up those noises i mentioned. do you think it might be the mic? any tips? this is killing me!

Sounds like???

A low consistent rumble?

A leaky tire?

You're actually picking up a radio station.

Sounds like a noise floor issue to me. Get better preamps and it "should" be less obvious. Record louder sources, or closer to the source also helps in that the source to noise ratio will favor the source. If there's an LF roll off on the mic, flip the switch. If there's one on the preamp, same.

Is this after you record and process (normalize) the sound? Or while recording?

Post a sample clip somewhere. Words are good, but hearing the noise is better. :D

My guesses in order from most likely to least are: bad gain staging, bad cable, bad building ground, poor power supply in your computer (insufficient filtering), bad mic.
