Quick question. I'm looking at a SP B1 as my project studio's first (good) mic...would it be alright to throw it in front of a kick if needed? (provided i used the pad & proper placement)

It shows the max SPL is 132 db...
I would think so except I don't remember what SPL a kick normally has. I THINK it's around 110 db but I'm not sure. Maybe someone will clue us in.

You could use a condenser for that, but you'd get way, way too much bleed from... everything, so you'd have to heavily EQ it. Normally a kick mic has a tailored response that massively boosts the bass frequencies.
Also, most folks use dynamic mics for kick mics because high frequency detail is not only not needed, but is somewhat undesirable. I realize that there are some kick mic condensers, but I've never seen them in the list of mics people recommend when somebody asks about a kick mic, despite being in the same general price range as their dynamic cousins.
Just something to think about.

I tried it on kick about 5 years ago just for shits and giggles and I personally didn't like it at all for that. It was much better on my large tom, but best as a room mic picking up the sound of the kit.
My personal favorite kick mic is the ATM 25. It's not expensive (about $150) and it is a real trooper that'll work with you. It acts on the kick the way that the B1 acts on voice, flat with no color. It accepts EQ like a dream.

The B1 will work just fine on a kik drum....as far as hurting it that is.
I too use an ATM25, but for certain applications I'll use a condenser on the kik. A Kel HM-1 does this quite well as does an SP B3 in cardioid. Yeah, theres bleed, its what I'm looking for in those situations. A cardioid condenser angled downward a foot to 18" in front of the kik, two room mics in cardioid above the cymbals, a snare mic and a room mic in omni and we got a sembalance of John Bonham drums sound.

Depends on how close you get, but much higher than 110dBSPL. 140dBSPL should be safe outside of the hole; inside the hole can get a little crazy, especially with the air blast to contend with--not strictly SPL, but very bad for a capsule that is not adequately screened.
