Awsome voices live but the recording voice....ehhhh ok

This doesnt happen with most but can anybody explain why sometimes for certian artist, they have amazing voices live. I mean just a wow factor. Then you get their album and it sounds ok but no where represents what you heard live? Here's the other thing, its not like the mixing and mastering is rinky dinky and im not talking about pitch or eq. ITs like it feels the wow factor is missing. This is something i have noticed sometimes. Your thoughts?
 
For me pitchiness is live but not on the album. Plus compression is crushing all the life out of the performance...
 
Many times that mojo that a band or an artist has in front of an audience just dosn't translate to tape, and vice versa.
 
Rarely have I found a singer as WOW live as on recordings actually. And those that have been have tended to be more in the gospel and soul fields where the songs were alot less adventurous.

Part of the answer is that being part of an audience that's appreciative, excited and full of adrenalin adds to the moment. It's like the difference between watching a football game on TV or being at the game, watching it from the stands. Your perceptions are influenced by the atmosphere around you.
 
What zzed said, plus add that effect to the vocalist.

A lot of times, it's hard to really put your heart into the performance in the studio. You don't have the adrenaline from being in front of the crowd; you're focusing a lot more on hitting the right notes; etc.
