Here is the problem,
the AW4416 has 16 tracks but only 8
inputs, how would you record a 10 piece
Jazz ensemble live , when the drummer wants a minimum of 5 mics, that leaves only 3 ins for 2 sax players a bass, two trumpets a piano, trombone, maybe a guitar, and a clarinet,
so did yahmaha totally drop the ball on this or what?
any help would be great

If you go to the Yamaha 4416 users' site, you will find a listed site of chat about the 4416. I was just there and you can ask your question there and get an answer.

I use the 2816 and I'm sure it only records on 8 tracks at once. Not sure about the 4416. I do like the quality sound that is possible with the 2816. Just burned a CD-R the other day and it was pretty easy, probably the easiest part I've come across on the box.

Most of those type units only have 8 inputs. The Roland 1824cd and the Fostex VF160 are the same way. What I would do is make a stereo mix of your drums using some sort of sub mixer like a small Mackie or something. Then the drums would only take up two tracks (actually three with the bass drum) I would stereo mix all the drums EXCEPT the bass drum. I would give that its' own channel. Also you might want to consider not using so many mics on the drum if it doesn't make your drummer turn into the Hulk.
A lot of recordists will use two mics; one on each side of the drumset and then a third mike for the bass drum. You'd be surprised how good this can sound if you take the time to get them in just the right position. After all, it's not like the drums are so soft you have to get the mic right on them to pick them up.
