Ok,
I just got this email, so I thought I would pass it along.
Here is your big chance. There is a lot of talent on this board. I’m going to send them something, I don’t know what yet.
Keep us posted and when you hit the big time, I want a backstage pass.. :D

thanks

Mmmmmmm

That sounds like you are giving your song away, whether you win a prize or not?

Indeed - sounds like a harvesting exercise of some kind. If you win, you get it recorded and mixed and/or some hardware - not quite the 'getting discovered' they quote at the beginning.

yes, you are. I just read that. So make sure its not something your are that fond of. :-)

Lol. Yeah. Make sure you enter the "contest" with your worst song that you don't mind them stealing. :D

As far as I can tell, EVERYTHING online is a scam. There are no free rides or getting discovered. Everything is a scam, a ruse, smoke and mirrors.

I looked at few of the other contests that are still open on that website. some don't have any "terms" at all, other than how long the song should be. No legalise. Those contests are not for Avid or Abbey Road either.

Personally I think they should only take the rights of the song away for the winner, which is a fair trade for $$$ worth of equipment if you decide to enter. Its hard to tell if they are just trying to cover their own asses legally or if they just want a lot of free songs for the price of the grand prize.

Either way, from the reading, if you had any hope of your song becoming a hit, you won't own it after you submit it. So again, don't pick something you are fond of.

you are so jaded..:D

who hurt you long ago.. :D

But seriously, I think you have a point. I'm sure someone will win and get the prize money. It does give me pause as to what I would submit.

Lol. I am very jaded. I can't deny that. I just learned a long time ago that nothing is free, everyone is out for themselves, music is less about being good and more about marketability, and the internet has made the predatory nature of the "music biz" even more brutal.

You are correct. I got the email from Avid last night. I assumed it was a promotion for them to push their DAW ware, which it probably is. My guess is half of the people entering this are of an age that has no clue that you legally can't just sample other people's voices, work, and remix it call it your own. So those will be dropped on the floor.

Oh, BTW, can you tell by looking at my Avatar that its a rubber punching dummy and not a human? He plays the guitar slightly better than I do..
:D

Lol. I thought it was a burn victim.

LOL!

Honestly, I picked it up on craigslist for cheap for my daughter to kick the crap out of. It sits in the laundry room and it scares the shit out of my wife every time she goes in to do the laundry. I hear a scream every week or so. :D

The night I first got it, I called my daughter and told her to bring a hat, sunglasses, and a t-shirt outside, so we dressed him up and brought him into the living room. I called my wife and said "Honey, come here and meet my friend Bob.". We had his bottom half behind a chair to help make it more real. She came around the corner and stared at him for about 4 seconds before she started laughing.

She said, At first I was embarrassed about how messy the house was, but then I saw bob didn’t have any arms and I thought, why am I embarrassed, he is the one without arms.. Then she realized he wasn’t real. :D

you can't tell from the photo, but I photoshopped a burning cigerette in his mouth. :D

Now he just sits in the laundry room with sheet over his head so as not scare my wife. Still with the baseball hat on, so he looks one of the castaways from the episode where they all dressed as ghosts on Gilligan's Island. :D

IaNaLB... A lot of those terms are pretty basic legalese that anyone who accepts user-written music is going to have to cover their bases. They need to specify that, yes, you are granting them license to use your song for the contest and all related promotion.

This one goes pretty far though, what with using terms like "perpetual" "irrevocable" "fully-sublicensable" and "transferable". At least they specify "non-exclusive", so you can go sell your song to other jerks too.

I ended up deciding to write something for other contest on that site. Syrian Dance track.
Doesn't seem to be any restrictions (at least for entering), and the winner gets some software, and the top three end up on benefit album with some Euro artists.

Sorry for my newbie question, but is there a way to see all the contestants?

Contestants or Contests? Contests yes, just go to the main page and filter on Music (unless you want to see photography, etc.)

Contestants, I have no idea. Probably not until the voting begins.
