Can anyone tell me about Avatar cabs?
Seem like a helluva deal. Especially with the THD deal they have going.

How about Eminence speakers? I've read posts stating that they are not "good" for metal. Not that I have problem with Celestions, just curious.

Eminence speakers (it has been a very long time since I've had a cab with them) don't break up the same way Celestions do. They aren't as 'smooth'. Things may have changed, it has been 25 years since I had my V4 cabinet.
A lot of it depends on what sound you are going for and what amp is driving it.

Good ol' vintage 30's then?

Is there anyone around who has an Avatar cab? How's the build on it? I found a post by "musicsdarkangel" who said it was built like a brick-shithouse or something to that affect.

I'm not sure if they (Avatar) will do this, but if they will mix different celestions in the same cab, what would be a good mix? A little variety is always good... especially since this will probably be the last toy my wife lets me buy for a good long while...

When I used to hang out at harmony-central.com, Avatar cabs was THE SHIT for your money... you really can't beat it and the guy is very friendly (dave I think... or maybe it's not dave lol), I have e-mailed him a few times and he's always there to answer every single question.

I say go for it, the eminence v12 are suppose to be very very nice, more shugg, less shrill then celestion.

Sorry, don't mean to be Mr. Spellchecker, but did you mean "more chugg"?

I was going to get my THD from Avatar, but I found the used one for too good of a deal.

But some of those speakers are really high watt speakers and the THD amps are not that high wattage so to make those speakers work is going to be something to consider.

They have that special on the 212 cabs were you get the Vintage30 with a G12H-30 for like 279 plus shipping. If you buy any cab, you get the amp for a scortching deal. The amp price is the same no matter what you get for a cab....or at least it was when I was emailing him about different combinations.

For the money, can't beat 'em. If you can tolerate the low-fi recording(camcorder), here's an Avatar 2x10,thru a Trace Elliot AH-500. There's also a signal from a Sunn Bass Coliseum 300 thru a Legion Sound 2x10, that handles effects, but the bulk of what you hear is the Avatar.

For the money, I thought I'd go ahead and get the 2x12, but as far as pushing the speakers hard enough, would the Univalve be better suited with a 1x12 vintage 30?

I guess there's always the option to run out of the uni into my ampeg... though I'm not sure what kind of crap it might sound like...

lbanks-doesn't sound bad... for a camcorder  :D

The new Eminence speakers arevery different from the old ones. Any of the "Redcoat Series" speakers are made to be direct competition to the Celestion line (though made in the USA, here in KY in fact, instead of China like Celestion). The Govenor, Tonker, Red Fang and others in that line have all gotten rave review from speaker gurus.

Check them out.

Well, I wasn't saying anything about a 212. 2 vintage 30's are 60 watts a peice, so 120 watts max rating. So a 15 watt uni is pushing 7.5 watts each speaker...at the most....since smaller tubes decrease the wattage (an EL84 in the Uni is like 4 watts.)

But I am sure 2 Vintage 30's would sound great still. I was more pointing toward speakers rated at 150 watts each, like many of the new Emenence speakers are. My BiValve is 30 watts going to 4 greenbacks, so I have 25 watt speakers getting about 7.5 watts each. Still sounds great though.

My cousin is an electronics engineer and builds amps and cabs and tells me the Avatar stuff is really good for the price. My input.

I like Eminence speakers too. I have a 4x10 loaded with them.

For recording it might be nice to have a few different speaker flavours so I agree that mixing speakers is a cool idea. An alnico speaker might be nice to mix with a ceramic. With your Univalve this could offer quite a few tonal options.

But what's the best cheap chinese speaker for under $100?

Conveniently enough, my ampeg is a 120 watt amp, so as long as I didn't crank the shit out of it, I could use the avatar with that as well... correct?

I suppose. Is the Ampeg tube or solidstate? Because tube outputs a lot higher than what they claim. So 100 watts might be in the neighborhood of 180 when all the way up.

Ampeg VT120, it's tube. I've heard mention that it is a "flawed design", (possibly by Farview?), but I'm not sure what is meant by that. Maybe it is not a class A tube amp, but a class AB...
