I came across a couple of 5" auratone monitors,
and just wondering how good they are ?...

been told they were used to mix the first direstraits albums...

Auratones are pieces crap, and that's exactly the point. They are used to check how mixes might sound on extremely lo-fi systems such as TVs or clock radios.....

They are a 2nd or 3rd mix reference tool and really shouldn't be your only reference monitor....

I agree with everything, but I think they are more or less "inexpensive speakers", VS pieces of crap. I feel that they have a very "pleasing" response to them, and they make it easy to listen to mixes on them. If my ears feel like they might be starting to get fatigued, I can switch to my Auratones, and feel that I am hearing a good balance of things. In many ways, they sound very similar to my dinosaur JBL 4311's and my URIE's. BUT... No...like the NS10's (which are pieces of crap!!), you can't judge bass levels at all, but you can tell if you can hear it or not...if that makes sense.

In the 70's and 80's, basically every large format console of any fame, had a pair of these sitting on their meter bridge. I think they are excellent speakers, and there are many "clones", but none have been able to get it "right" like the Auratones. Some have believed that there was a Radio Shack speaker in the same league...and other full range, mini speaker systems that were just they same. THOSE also are the pieces of crap and a waste of money. I would HIGHLY recommend picking up a pair of Auratones if anyone gets a chance. They are not expensive, and easily worth the <$100 you should pay for them. (Mine were $89/pair new back 25+ years or so ago.)
