Hi,

I am wandering if there is a difference between a very good Hi-Fi system that don't add colour to the sound, with flat response, good diffusion etc... and a good pair of monitor (same range of price).

If yes what is it?

Thanks a lot!

Yes and No. :)

I know that answer sucks, but here's the [short] story.

There are consumer oriented Hi-fi speakers out there with the qualities you describe which would make outstanding professional recording monitors. However, they are generally not used for two main reasons as I see it:

1. Hi-fi speakers don't have the control features which professionals tend to expect in monitors.

2. The cost/performance ratio of these Hi-fi speakers is usually not as good as pro monitors.

Personally I think reason #1 is not valid. I build speakers with this attitude: "Here are my speakers, designed to be as accurate as possible within my engineering capabilities and within your budget. This is the exact manner in which they should be installed. Any deviation will degrade their performance. They require no equalization. Any EQ tweaking will degrade their performance. Period."

I can take this position (the correct position IMHO) because I only build speakers on a custom basis and... it's no longer my day job.

Reason #2 is valid, and why I suggest you stick with pro monitors. For most every Hi-fi speaker suitable for monitoring you will find a professional speaker which is better suited to the task and of comparable performance. I'm sure there are exceptions, but none come to mind. It would take some research to track them down.

Hope this helps.:)

Thanks a lot Barefoot!

I was pretty sure that there was an issue because I don't hear often that people use those kind of setting. I ask this because I talk with a guy who sell very good Hi-fi system (he design/build speaker too) and he show me a system that sound way better IMHO (and in his respected opinion hehe) than alesis m1 powered and little bit better than tannoy reveal active for almost the same price of the tannoy reveal. But I think that It's not because I like them more that it's better for recording.

thanks again!

It's possible, but in that price range I doubt it.

Which speaker was he suggesting?

The speaker are Triangle Titus (french com) with a Cambridge amp (UK com). (1050$can for this system and I can't get the tannoy reveal under 1100$can (I know our prices suck...))
