Audiophile 24/96 hardware send/return configuration with Cubase SX

Hi Folks,
It's been a while since I posted because you people kick ass. I almost always find what I need on this site. It has accelerated my general knowledge of recording ten fold in the past 2 years. Thanks for that.

Is it possible to configure the M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 sound card to send a signal to outboard equipment (compressors/effects) and return it to Cubase in real-time during mixdown....all using the S/PDIF connections? I don't have any I/O devices other than those supplied by the soundcard itself. I found a lot of related send/return info by searching the site, but nothing as specific as this. Any ideas anyone?

Example: I've recorded two acoustic guitar tracks in Cubase SX and would like to try different compressor settings with my TL Audio compressor while monitoring the overall mix in real-time in Cubase SX.

I've posted this in "Computer Recording and Soundcards" forum as well as the "Cubase User" forum, so forgive the redundancy.

Nice question, really. I was searching for answers in the other forum, but I couldn´t find your thread.
I hope there is somebody in here able to respond to your question. If you have an answer already, please share it with me.

I don't use SX, but this is how imagine it MIGHT work........

Use the primary outputs as your monitor outs (ie, your left and right outputs you use now). Then, direct the acoustic track to a BUS OUT in Cubase. Configure this bus so it outputs to one of the SPDIF outs (or both - may only do stereo outs). Then using a A/D convertor in-between, route this signal into your compressor. From there make the compressor and main out signals hook up through a mixer, then send that signal off to your power amp/speakers.

So your signal chain will look like this.

Audiophile SPDIF out > D/A convertor > Compressor > mixer >Speakers

Also,

Audiophile analogue out > mixer > speakers

where the two signals meet at the mixer.

Do remember you need a digital to analogue converter to do this...... (hence the D/A bit)

Just as long as you've got one and all the right leads, you should be sorted.
