I have both models and the the 4050, as Harvey points out, is a more versatile mic. I find I need both because the 4033 has a little more sparkle for string instruments but the 4050 gets more use overall for other things.

string instruments meaning acoustic guitar and such or orchestral instruments?

im guessing i would use it mostly for vocals, or if i had a pair, drum overheads. besides my drum mics and 57's, i only have an oktava MK319, which easily has to be the best $75 i've spent.

Harvey, I respect your experience, but I wont agree with you here.

It is widely known as an LDC, Audio Technica calls it an LDC, so that is what i am going with.

"technically" it may be an SDC, but officially it is labeled an LDC.

I know, "technically" the diaphragm is supposed to be larger than 3/4(though I dont think there are "exact" standards), but if someone is looking for the microphone, they WILL NOT find it under the SDCs, it will be in with the LDCs, as that is what it has always been known as.

I looked it up and while the spec sheet and the user manual avoid labeling the 4050 as an "LDC", they do call it an LDC in the initial 4050 blurb, several times, in fact.

I guess they have a new definition for LDC. My understanding has always been that it began at 1" and larger. 5/8" is a lot closer to 1/2" than it is to 1".

Ive never heard it called an SDC. You mentioning it was the first ive ever heard.

I dont know what defines an LDC anyway different sites say different things. No offense , Sir. I have immense respect for your experience and wisdom(and age!).

No offense taken. AT and I simply disagree on what constitutes an LDC. I might just call them about it on Monday for the hell of it and see if they have a different definition for LDC than most other companies.

Yeah, I was kinda shocked at the size of the diaphram, when I first looked at one. But this is the first time I've thought of it not being an LDC. Go get em, Harvey. Oh yeah, Harvey, have you used a pair of 4050s for drum overheads? Being as they are close to a SDC. If so, how do you like em? I've tried the FOK positioning, and I had some phase issues with my kick mic inside the drum, so I scrapped the track. I may buy another 4050 real soon!

I haven't had much experience with the Audio Technica line, especially with their vocal mics. I have (and like) the ATM25 and the Pro 25, and their small electret AT831b, which I use on acoustic guitars.

Hey Nick,
I've run the 4050 thru my Tampa with great results on acoustic, vocals and as a room mic so far, and all with very nice results. The 4050 and the Tampa seem clean. No coloring. To me, they're a nice match.
