So I ignorantly ordered an Echo 3g audio interface online because it seemed to match what I was looking for (cost around $300) and when it arrives I find out that it is not compatible with my laptop.

I'm running an XPS m1530 laptop, and I am trying to turn it into my home studio. What audio interface would you recommend (something cheap that gets the job done) and what can I do with the one I ordered? I opened it before I discovered that it's not compatible...

Thanks for any advice!

What interface are you planning on using ? USB or Firewire ?
How many inputs and types ... mic's, line in's, guitar in's ??? MIDI needed ?

USB

Firewire

There are some other 8-ish input models

I just went the USB 2.0 / Mixer route with Tascam M-164UF (16 channels / No MIDI) http://www.tascam.com/products/m-164uf.html

Yeah it was designed for the card to be put inside the actual hardware (computer) and I am running with a laptop.

I am currently just trying to seriously improve the quality of the vocals that I record, and it will be done via USB. I won't need many inputs (maybe mic and a keyboard) and I am looking for quality to price ratio over everything else.

Thanks for the advice Johnnymegabyte, does this help you narrow it down?

I could really use some advice if anyone has any suggestions
