I'm trying to find an audio I/O console/controller that works well with Cakewalk Home Studio. I'm looking for a unit that looks like a mixer with faders and the like, has phantom power for a condenser mic, has a pre-amp/EQ for up front tone shaping, and that will also let me control things from the unit's console instead of having to use the mouse and keyboard. I also don't need midi & 4 tracks are enough. I've looked at Tascam's US224 & 428, neither has phantom power & the EQ knobs control your software's EQ, not signal leaving the box. Also, I've never heard anything about how these units work with Cakewalk. I've heard horror stories about their compatibility with some other DAW software, though. Any ideas?

You're describing a digital mixer. ;)

If you want to use it to control things within SONAR then you WILL need MIDI. It's the only way to do it.

If you didn't want preamps, then you could get a control surface like the Mackie control or one of the new Behringer boxes (if you can find one and get it to work!).

Get a regular soundcard, and the Behringer BCF 2000... :)

tascam fw series, the 1884 may be overkill but there is a little brother.
