Audio interface question

So I'm getting a custom made pc for recording, and as i have an audio interface already (Behringer UCA202) i don't have to get a high priced sound card do i because they are basically the same thing right? So i could just get the basic sound card and spend money on more ram or something?

Just so i'm clear and don't spend money on unnecessary things.

An audio interface and soundcard are one and the same in this situation. Of course that Behringer is not the ideal solution, but if it meets your needs you could definitely stick with it if you are on a budget. You would stand to gain higher resolution, more I/O count, improved latency performance, and better quality if you were to upgrade.

If you're asking whether, when building your custom made PC, you need to get a high quality soundcard installed in it, the answer is no, because your interface replaces the soundcard in the machine for recording and playback tasks. Don't waste the money... more RAM, faster harddrive etc. are better options.:D

Getting a high quality interface into your set up is another question...

Personally, if I were having a custom audio PC built I would fit at least an M-Audio 2496.

You then have a complete system and the internal PCI card is always useful for checking things out, playing CD/toob etc. The card will not in any way hamper the connection of a another, external interface and for probably a lot less than $100 you get two 24bit analogue channels (the 202 is 16bit only) MIDI and S/PDIF.

The choice of an external AI is legion but IMHO bang for buck, if it has enough i/o for you, you will not beat the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6. Gets you Cubase LE6, and effectively a monitor controller to boot!

Get the cheapest internal sound card you can--you don't need more when your prime card is either an external or a specialist PCI card as recommended above.

However, I have to ask, what are you connecting to the UCA202? It's a line level only device and can't handle microphones unless they go through a mixer or pre amp. Once you add in the cost of a mixer or pre amp you may do better to buy a higher quality USB interface than the Behringer instead. The UCA202 is good value for the money--but the money is super low. If you're going to an expensive custom PC a better interface might be a better match for your hardware.

What's a better interface? That'll be a LONG thread!
