...The MK2s are even less and they seem to be about the same thing; one guy is selling one for under $200 with the card. That's a heck of a steal if they're about the same thing.
I understand that the newer (MK3) breakout boxes will not work with the older (PCI-324) pci cards. So you've got future expansion problems to consider there.
...Is the major difference that the MK2 is 24-bit/48 kHz and the MK3 is 24-bit/96 kHz?
That shouldn't be a problem. Most of us record at 44.1 or 48 kHz sample rate anyway. I'm sure you can choose the resolution for each session. (omg, i'm starting to sound like a salesman here!)

...In the reading I was doing today, I found out that you can use any IDE drive up to 2 TB in size. So since the HD24's got two drive sleds, you could put 4 TB in that puppy. That would solve your concerns about space.
If those drives are formatted using FAT32 or something standard like that, you may be able to (after recording) pull the drive and pop it into your computer using an ide removable expansion bay. That would be more convenient than copying through the wire.
Oh well, recording "in" the computer to begin with is even better yet.
