I aplogize if someone has already posted about this, but this card looks amazing to me..especially from SoundCrapper.

It's got 24/96 recording capabilities and can play back in stereo at up to 192 khz. Also has an improved snr over the last audigy.

What are your thoughts on this card?
 
Dude, it's still just a game card. What the hell is the point of recording in 24 bit with unbalanced inputs? The input signal is still -10, whichis 14dB less than a balanced +4. So what is the point of all that headroom if you could never hit the top w/out tons of dirty amplification anyhow?

The thing is that Creative always has been and always will be a gamers card, designed primarily as a "jack of all trades" gaming experience.

Wonder if v2 still creates fake 24-bit files with only 16-bit information in them (Sound-on-Sound magazine caught them on this with v1).

My $0.02 is that if you need an onboard MIDI synth/soundfont machine get a $30 vanilla OEM SBLive, or step up to the $150-$200 REAL 24/96 soundcard lines if you want to create music.

the soundblaster only plays back in 24bit, it doesn't record in it.

Actually, you're wrong. The Audigy 2 does support 24bit recording. The only problem is that its ASIO drivers are limited to 16bit/48kHz audio.
 
Actually I am also considering stepping up from an audigy to audigy 2. I guess i am just afraid to try somehting else since my machine has always performed pretty well with Audigy.
 
Does it actually record at 24bit though? I seem to remember something about the audigy having 16bit A/D converters and it simply padded to create 24bit files.

Still, there are better solutions out there geared specifically for recording.

I reckon that's the specs on the audigy card. I think we're talking about the Audigy 2 card.

Its right on the website. The Audigy 2 does do 24 bit recording, but not with ASIO drivers.
 
Ok thanks for clearing that up. I don't visit their website often.

As much as I did consider this card, let us not forget that on the box of the original Audigy it said it was a 24-bit card when in fact it wasn't really (okay, playback yes but who gives?) - let's hope there's nothing dodgy like that about this new one card too, eg: it has an amazing zero latency when in fact it's 3 seconds, hmm?
 
Well, the zero latency probably refers to the latency while recording...in other words they route the incoming signal to an output before it hits the A/D, which means that you don't hear your signal as it really appears post-converter, but you don't have to worry about latency when monitoring.

Creative labs is well-known for juicing up specs and emphisizing the unimportant though. :)
