audacity vs Kristal...

Hi guys - This is such a great forum!! I use Cakewalk GT Pro which doesn't support VST. I hate to trade up bec it just keeps getting more complicated & I spend my time learning software instead of making music. However, both Audacity & Kristal were recommended as easy to use & where I cd import my vocal track & use some VST effects & send it bk to GT. Wd you recommend one over the other? Simplicity is my priority. or should I just upgrade GT & keep it all in 1 software? The upgrade looks much busier & more complicated. thanks.

They're both free... Just download & install and see which one works best for you!


Kristal supplies you with an On Screen Mixer Console to work multiple tracks easier, but I find the track editing features in Audacity to be simpler to use...

Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but remember... you get what you pay for... They're pretty solid products, but they are free...

I'm Using Both....

I just finished up the root tracks to the CD I'm doing, and am laying vocals now. Using Kristal is a piece of cake, but since you can not do any editing of the wave form I use Audacity for that. This combo works great for me and, as said before, there both FREE! And Kristal has identified every VST effect I have tried with it. Grab 'em and try 'em out.

Ya, Audacity isn't really good for mixing but it's great for editing and managing audio files.

One thing is Audacity doesn't do MIDI tracks

I found bouncing WAV to WAV and adding new parts easier
Almost in the same way of using two cassette decks, but internally on the PC
Use Windows Media Player for playback (or your choice player), and Creative Recorder for recording (or recording software of your choice)
Use Windows Mixer for levels
If you F-up, then re-start playback and start recording --- O SO EZ

Plus, this is the way George Martin use to record The Beatles
Tape machine one to tape machine two, back and forth ( analog )
