i don't know if this is the right place, but it seems to be the most fitting.

when recording on my aw16g, i've noticed that the sound is crackly and basically just awful, no matter what i've tried. is there something wrong with mine? or is there some sort of setting on the AW that i can change and make it sound better?

i've tried several mics and cords, all seem to have the same problem. any ideas?

You might want to visit www.dijonstock.com. It is a fantastic AW16G user group forum.

Your question is very general. "Crackly and awful" sounds could be the result of many different things. If you've ruled out mics and cords as the source of your problem you might want to look at your input gain pot settings (assuming you are using the G's internal preamps)....."crackly and awful" could mean you are clipping. Make sure you give yourself enough headroom....no peak signal levels in the red, in fact you might want to peak out at -6 or -9.

Another possibility is a defective AW16G. Most problems are user error. Take it from someone who has made most of those errors.

yeah, there is plenty of headroom, still just bad sound quality.

The Yamaha workstations have very poor mic pre's to begin with. I would suggest you find the problem first. Take Bartman's advice and consult other's that use the 16G. Then upgrade the pre's. I currently use Great Rivers on my 4416, they are quite pricey, but well worth the investment.

i'd check into something being wrong with your unit. in functional shape they sound pretty rad.
