A wall wart is an external AC-DC convertor, which does not bring heavy metal bands to Jesus.-Richie

Rnla

From what I've read, the RNLA is supposed to be the "character-inducing" cousin of the RNC. How much color does it add? Does anyone have both? I almost got it instead of the RNC, but I opted for clarity, figuring I can always add color later if I want.

the RNC isn't rack mountable?
Yeah it is. You have to buy a Funklogic tray for it. And two RNC's will fit nicely together in one rackspace.

I have both. I wouldn't say that the RNLA adds a dramatic amount of color, but it is definitely more noticeable than the RNC, depending on how aggressive you are with the gain reduction. Both have their places.

and another $25 to ditch the wall wart and make it rack-mountable.

to do that it would probably add way more then 25 bux more... I remember fletcher posting that it costs about 20K to get your PSU to pass inspection or something or other. I dunno about the balancing part but its not a big deal just buy an unbalanced patchbay and connect your RNC's/RNLA's to that.

Yeah, it's not just another $25 to put an internal power supply in, and probably plenty more than $25 to put it in a rack unit from the factory. I think those two changes could easily double or triple the price. The whole point of the RNC/RNLA is that they provide acceptable performance for around $200.

For what it's worth, I bought an RNLA sight unseen, based on all the hype and positive feedback. Once I heard it I did not understand the appeal of it at all, it sounded cheap to me--which is about right because it is inexpensive. Maybe a good value for the buck for a new compressor, but you see posts like "is there anything else worth buying under $1,000 besides the RNC?", and that's crazy.

I sold my RNLA a month or two after I bought it, as I was never going to use it. However, the guy I sold it to seems thrilled with it, so it's really one of those YMMV situations.

I'm still on the fence with mine, haven't really given it a workout yet so I'm holding on to it. The RNLA can really pump though, I don't record much that requires that.

damn that kinda sucks. I wish it was rack mountable without having to buy extra stuff. Hows the Behringer composer pro? It's only a little over 100 bucks and has an expander/de esser/noise gate as well, plus it's rack mountable which is a big plus. I have a question, if i'm adding an outboard effect processor during mixing do I just need one? I'm a little confused what to do exactly during mixdown regardling effects. I really just need outboard gear to track with and plug ins for mixing. But I hear outboard reverb is much better than plug ins. Reverb is a big part of my sound, so if that's the case i'd need an outboard reverb.
