My experience with the 4040 is that it is not this. It is more of a "here it is in all it's naked glory" kind of mic. I love it, but I wouldn't recommend it for this application.

It is not forgiving to vocals, very detailed, very accurate.

chessrock and or others...what would be a little better pre (area of up to 400?) I can push 500 but only if its somewhere I can get it cheaper than its worth like ebay or musicians friend where I can pay monthly looking for a full warmbodied guitar sound and the same sounding vocals *maybe with a little extra something to em to* help a brotha out mang
thanks

The BricK has been mentioned a lot in that price range. The Tampa. Safesound.

Tdukex makes some good recommendations. The Brick is good. RNP is good. I actually like the Rane MS-1B a lot, and that's only around $200 per channel.

I just won the Rane ms 1a and a microphone on ebay for $8... so I assume the 1b can be had for much cheaper than $200

The main problem with recording both voice and guitar on the same mic is that you have to back off from the mic, that means that you'll have to turn up the gain which also turns up your room sound. Unless you have a nice space that means you're probably going to need some acoustic treatment.

You should consider a ribbon mic and a pre with plenty of clean gain if you're want that old school, one mic sort of thing.

Wow. Not saying the 1A is anything to jump and shout about, but for 8 bucks ...

that's just a sick deal.
