Assigning wavs

I know this has probably been covered, but I couldn't find it anywhere:

How can I assign a .wav file to a midi note? i.e., if instead of the standard midi kick, when I enter a midi value of 35, have cakewalk play a wave of a kick?

What you want is a sampler. I recommend VSampler.

I'm sorry to seem so ignorant, but what would a sampler do for me? What I'm interested in doing is plugging my drum pad in and hearing wav files that i've already got on my PC

That's what a sampler do! And I didn't mean a hardware sampler, you can get software samplers now. Any software sampler will do what you want to do. Check out VSampler.
