ASIO driver, latency, Sony Vegas pro, vocal recording

I really don't know much about what I'm talking about...

However, I need a way to be able to record a track while hearing the previously recorded tracks as well as what is being recording through the mic. Here is what I've been through so far.

Had the basic Sony Vegas which does not have "input monitoring." But, I had a usb mic that sort of has this ability, however it isn't really loud enough. I can't turn the mic or volume up loud enough to hear what I need to hear through the mic, withouth exceeding the volume limits of Sony Vegas. Or I don't know what I'm doing. Very possible.

My next attempt was to try Sony Vegas Pro and Acid, both which have input monitoring. This was the sound I wanted but it's late. According to some research this is called "latency" and the solution was supposed to be to download ASIO drivers. So I did. But, when I go to Preferences-Audio Devices and pick the ASIO drivers, the input monitoring goes away, or I don't know what I'm doing.

All I want is to be able to record, hear what I'm recording through the headphones as well as the other tracks, and it not be a second late. Is there an easy fix?

Get a real asio soundcard.

ASIO4all (i'm assuming that's what you're referring to) is a great hack, but it is a band-aid not a cure.

Latency is purely a function of the soundcard and its drivers. You want a real asio soundcard. That on-board has about 40cents worth of chips and is made for cheap beeps, boops and light gaming.

Here's a good guide and tested suggestions that WORK: http://www.tweakheadz.com/soundcards_for_the_home_studio.htm
